Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays to all of you! I know I've been slow with the updates during the past 2 months but thanks for sticking with me during this busy time! I have some fun events planned in the coming months and some great new books to share with you so stay tuned.

Speaking of the holidays, the librarians from the Worthington Libraries organize a little event they call "Reads Under Wraps" for the holiday season.

Children's display for "Reads Under Wraps" at Worthington Northwest Library

During the month of December, the library elves carefully select some of their favorite books, write a brief — yet cryptic— description, and then lovingly wrap them before placing them on display for the patrons to select.

My favorite part of the whole event (aside from unloading all my extra wrapping paper on the librarians...) is witnessing the excitement of the young patrons as they read the description on every single book before finally choosing their surprise adventure. What kid doesn't like presents? Where some adults may be reluctant to take a gamble on picking a book sight unseen, the children have enthusiastically embraced the event and experienced yet another successful scheme to encourage lifelong reading. Congratulations to the Worthington librarians for organizing yet another successful event!

What events and traditions do you enjoy at your local library?

Banned Book Week

Banned Book Week is well under way! I love seeing all the different ways libraries, book stores, schools, bloggers, etc... have used this week to celebrate the freedom to read. The displays and activities across the US have been truly inspiring but I have to admit one of my favorite parts about this week are the Banned Books Trading Cards from the Lawrence Public Library.

Since 2012 the Lawrence Public Library has been asking artists to submit artwork featuring their favorite banned or challenged book. Out of the many wonderful and creative submissions they (somehow) narrow it down to 7 pieces, which are then printed and distributed daily during Banned Book Week. Unfortunately I don't live in Kansas - but that's okay because you can purchase the 2013 and 2014 cards and have it delivered to your home.

You can see the card of the day on the Lawrence Public Library Facebook page. Also check out some of the other ways Lawrence is celebrating BBW.
