Book Review: The Fourteenth Goldfish

Author: Jennifer Holm
Rating: ☕ ☕ ☕ ☕
My Thoughts:
Jennifer Holm’s new book “The Fourteenth Goldfish” is a cute story of self-discovery. The reader follows Ellie as she is trying to cope with the huge transition from elementary school into middle school. Ellie is unsure of herself and how to handle all the changes happening in her life. All this is hard enough to deal with and then Melvin shows up on her doorstep throws her world into a tailspin.

This is a great book for a reader who is ready to move beyond “Nate the Great” but still isn’t ready for “The Hobbit”. The chapters are short and the dialogue is fast paced, but easy to understand. The changing relationship between Ellie and Melvin is so important to the story and I loved watching how they learned from each other. My favorite parts were the “conversations” between Ellie’s mother and Melvin – they were hilarious! I must admit though that I wish there were more chapters with Ellie’s Goth school-mate, Raj.
I had such a great time reading this book that I couldn’t wait to share it with my children. So far they love it and like me they want more Raj. I look forward to reading more books from Jennifer Holm in the future (especially if she writes one about Raj).
I received this book for free from Random House Children’s Books in exchange for an honest review.
